Compare Suite was not designed with software engineers or testers in mind, but it appeared that most of the features that office users like, are recognized by software professionals as well. We had no option, but to add even more features that have made Compare Suite a good choice for any software development team.
A classical comparison is done by words. The file compare utility search for similar blocks in two files and presents the results by highlighting the differences. This works great for the similar documents. What about documents that have nothing in common? Compare software won’t be able to find similar blocks and will highlight too many changes that will be meaningless for the user.
When comparing two documents one finds the differences and makes a conclusion. What if there are differences that are not significant for the comparison? For example:
Developer’s comments in the source code are important, but they don’t affect code execution.
Different date and time stamps in the end of each page will be highlighted as a difference,
Imagine a typical situation. An employee sends to his supervising manager a new version of the document for the review. Fortunately, the manager has Compare Suite installed and the analysis of the modifications will be much easier:
The manager opens two files, and in a few seconds Compare Suite shows the results.
Compare Suite supports file archive formats seamlessly. Pass a .zip or .rar archive to Compare Suite and you will work with it as if it was a simple folder. This is a great time saver when you need to compare the current version of the file with the version from a backup archive.
Command line interface in Windows is a great way to automate things. The comparison of files is not an exception. Of course we cannot automate all of the process of making the computer decide what changes are important and what are not, but what you can do is to make the process as easy as possible.
We have recently published videos where RoutineBot does an automatic check of “BSC Designer” software:
What was left behind the scenes is Compare Suite, which was used to compare actual and expected results, and the batch files that were used to automate the scripts. We’ve gotten some questions asking to share the full testing technology used.
There are many document compare tools that claim to be the fastest, the most accurate, and the easiest to use. Actually, the speed of comparison is never an issue unless you are designing a high performance system. As for accuracy, any software will highlight all the differences for you, the questions are if it is easy to:
Read the results of comparison
Make some conclusions from these results
Share these results if needed
That’s where the real difference between compare tools is.
Use document audit to accept or decline changes made in plain text files.
